Hopi BLUE AHOTE KACHINA DOLL, 10.25" Katsina Sculpture, Hand Carved, M Howard For your consideration is this sensational rendition of the Blue Ahote Kachina dolls hand carved by famous Hopi master carver Milton Howard. Milton always uses the highest grade of cottonwood root and hand oils the root to bring out the wood grain. The details are meticulous and the painted colors are bright and crisp. Just simply amazing craftsmanship! This wonderful sculpture features the Blue Ahote kachina wearing a Plains Indian headdress, holding a rattle on in one hand and a bow in the other. With a cliff pueblo at his feet, he wears a turquoise jacla necklace, a seashell bandolier, with realistic feathers and fur to finish. Measures approx 10-1/4" tall, including base, x 5" wide. Named and hallmarked on bottom. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. A fantastic hand carved Blue Ahote Kachina Doll by Hopi master carver Milton Howard to add to your collection! ** A'hote is considered a good hunter. He may appear in any of the directional colors, the two most common being the Yellow (Sikyahote) or the Blue (Sakwahote).
The A'hote is the Grand Katsina Uncle of the Mixed Katsina Group and
appears in the Mixed Dances. The A'hote is painted in two different
ways. He appears with planets on his mask. The other A'hote version has a
"split" mask with different colors on each side. Both seem to be
derived from a Plains Indian because he wears a long trailing eagle
feather headdress. ** *
Milton Howard, master kachina carver, was born on Feb. 8, 1964 in Tuba
City, Arizona on the Navajo-Hopi reservation. His father, also a kachina
carver, is from the Third Mesa area and his mother is from the Rocky
Ridge area. He is married and has three children. He took up carving as a
young boy, learning from other members of his family, but he was not
serious about it until he was living in Albuquerque, in his early
twenties, going to school to be an electrician and carving with his
cousins, Jerry and Dan Bert, in his free time. He sold his dolls to his
classmates, carving kachinas for orders only. At about 30 years of age
he made the decision to start carving full time. Master Hopi carver
Milton Howard is world renown for his carving skills and many collectors
snap up his creations when available. His works of art are found in
some of the finest art galleries around the world. * *
The Kachina doll is given in hopes of abundance and health as well as
for education. The Hopis were the original carvers, using a single piece
of cottonwood root. The Navajo began carving in their own creative way,
adding feathers, fur and leather to their creations. There are over 350
Kachina dolls, each with its own attributes. *
(As each hand carved kachina doll is unique, there may be slight artistic differences in color, size and details. This is an excellent representation of the handmade item you will get)
