Cultivation: Cultivation of the seeds indoors is possible all year round. Place the seeds in the fridge for 5 to 8 days, then soak them in room temperature water for 12 to 20 hours and plant them 1cm deep in moist growing medium. Germination occurs after 8 to 12 weeks.

Location / Light: Ornamental cherries love bright to sunny places.

Watering and fertilizing: From April to September you should water a lot and just keep the soil evenly moist in the cold months. Supply the plant with organic bonsai fertilizer from March to June and from September to October.

Pruning: After flowering, cut back the new shoots to two pairs of leaves. If a topiary is done, please be careful not to remove too many of the new flower buds.

Soil: A mixture of equal parts garden soil, coarse sand and peat is ideal. Make sure there is good drainage, as the ornamental cherry does not tolerate waterlogging.

Important growing tips:

Be sure to use special potting soil or coconut substrate for sowing. These are permeable to air and low in nutrients. The roots develop much better in it.

Keep the substrate evenly moist but not wet throughout the germination period.

Cover the cultivation vessel with a translucent film or glass to prevent mold and air regularly (2-3 times a week). Better yet, use a small indoor greenhouse with automatic ventilation.

Avoid full sun (in summer) for the first 6 weeks.

5-8 weeks after germination, the seedlings can be pricked (repotted) carefully. Be careful not to damage the young roots.

Origin: The plant is native to Asia and mainly to Japan.
