LOGAN’S RUN

William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson

NY: Dial Press, 1967

Hard back book in publisher’s original red binding stamped in black on the spine with the original dust jacket, not price clipped.

The book is in very good condition with two small diagonal areas on the top front board edge and bottom board edge indicating tape removal that held a clear jacket protector over the dust jacket. There is slight bit of shelf slant to the volume with slight edge wear to the bottom board edge that results from shelving a book. The black endpapers are without inner hinge cracking and firm. The interior pages are very good and I have noted in my photos two pages with minor marks. The dust jacket is not faded and not price clipped showing the $3.95 price on the front inner jacket panel. There are a few small closed tears on re edge of the front jacket flap, top of jacket spine, rear jacket panel edge. Overall this is an attractive book in an attractive dust jacket that is rather scarce to encounter in our experience as rare book sellers over 30 years.

Thus particular book, one that I had a difficult time to find and purchase (pre internet and without instantly made “book genius” book sellers), I presented this book to my friends and authors over two decades ago where their personal embellishments to myself are immortalized on the half title page - until the fire men start the burning books.

Thus novel is an important work and has stood the test of time in the science fiction and literature genres, especially as unique dystopian fiction. The book has never received the rightful acclaim of greatness it should have.

The book and terms such as “Sandman” and “runner” have entered into the lexicon of science fiction literature and into the general lexicon of terminology. A film was made years ago with Michael Yorke. William Nolan looked forward to a remake of the film for many years and many scripts were written with the usual revision process but was never realized.

Weirdly enough this novel about population control seems a prophetic thing that’s coming to fruition in our time as you can see reading the front and rear jacket flap panels, this was certainly a product of 1967 with the sexual revolution, youth counter culture, LSD and the rebellion against “the man” and everything Washington D. C. And the dedications are different.

This book is from my personal collection and was personally inscribed to myself by these two fine authors and good men. I will provide a document of authentication regarding the signatures and inscription and briefly something about my association as a bookseller with these two authors. I’ve pictured a document from another book in this listing to show you what it will look like, but referring to this book.
