1861 10PC LOT CIVIL WAR DOCUMENTS 3RD RHODE ISLAND ARTILLERY GAR ROBERT NEVIN. A wonderful and rare lot of 10 documents from Lt Robert Nevin whom served in various companies of the 3rd Regt Rhode Island Artillery, later Heavy Artillery. He mustered in a private in May 1861 in the 1st Rhode Island, Oct 1861 it appears he was promoted to Sgt in the 3rd Artillery and mustered out in 1863 as 2nd Lt. There is promotion documents, pension document for the Soldiers Home in Togus maine, discharge, 2nd Lt appointment, a letter to Lt Nevin at Hilton Head Sc dated Aug 26, 1962 from Capt DA Allen 47th NY Vols, field letter of promotion to 2nd Lt from the Army Paymaster (paper taped on folds on the back side). A furlough letter from Apr 1862 at Hilton head describing Nevin's Scottish born heritage, his blue eyes, age of 35 years, height of 5ft 9 1/2in to return to Providence for a period, by order of Brig Gen HW Benham, signed by AB Ely Aide de Campe and Nevin's Appointment as Sarge. Company A, 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery was initially organized in Providence, Rhode Island as the 3rd Rhode Island Infantry in August 1861. It was officially changed to heavy artillery on December 19, 1861 at Hilton Head, South Carolina.
