History

The Ping Eye 2 - Released in 1982 is the best-selling set of irons of all time…period. Pages could be written on this iron design and the simple brilliance of it. 

Then in 1985, Ping introduced what is known as the “square groove model.” The groove design itself is identical to the “U groove” with the only changes occurring in the spacing of the grooves on the face and a slight radius added. This reduced the surface area between the groove but did not change the distance between the inside edges of the grooves, which Karsten believed as an engineer was the proper way to measure groove spacing and not at the top of the radius—it was well within the rules of golf. Unfortunately, the USGA and Karsten didn’t see eye to eye (no pun intended) on the grooves and this created one of the most monumental lawsuits in the history of golf. 

During all of this, Ping Eye 2 irons continued to sell extremely well, which is why, to this day, it’s difficult not to come across a set at either a local muni, used club rack, or even the odd club at a swap meet. They were seemingly everywhere and helped make Ping the company it is today.
Soon after, the Eye 2+ (Plus) model was introduced with an improved sole design, and with it one of the most famous wedges of all time was born.


Though no longer manufactured, Ping Eye 2 Irons are still available on the secondary market.

In addition to large cavity backs and perimeter weighting, Ping Eye 2 irons are cast-built to provide more forgiveness. Ping's exclusive fitting process offers users several different configurations. The black dot series is standard, but Ping irons can be adjusted up to 4 degrees flat or upright. Ping irons can be custom-built longer or shorter than standard for golfers of different heights.

Ping Eye2's were a legendary giant in the game-improvement category. Ping has introduced several new models, but many golfers still use Ping Eye 2 irons nearly 40 years after their appearance on the market.

Review: "These are irons I keep coming back to, they just seem to preform well. Mine have the ZZ-lite shafts and I really like how they work, stiff but not harsh feeling with the eye 2 heads. I have the 3-pw and the sand wedge which is the best sw I've played out of traps. The heads are bigger than blade type irons but not huge so you can still move them through the rough. I also appreciate their durability."

"So consistent... It probably helps that I've been playing these irons since the late 80's. I don't seem to hit them too short. 8 iron is good for 140 yards or so. Can hit the 2 iron consistently, especially off the tee. Great alternative for tight tee shots. I used to shoot in the 70's, but don't play regularly over the last several years. Only once last year, but hitting these irons is like riding a bike. Don't swing too hard, feel the club head, stay over the ball, and the results are good! Super accurate.. I tend to fade my woods, but not my irons. Can play 'em high and soft or drive it in shallow. I don't recall what I paid for them... They weren't cheap back in the day... But I've had them so long, the value is proven to be excellent. They're a bit odd looking I guess, but I hit them so well, I've grown to love the way they look. So confidence inspiring..."
