It comes from an ancient ocean, trapped underground, that feeds a spring 10,000 feet high in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
In the valley leading to the lost city of the Incas, a unique salt harvest has taken place for two thousand years. Like a huge marble staircase, the salt terraces (about 4,200 of them) stretch up the slope towards the city. Some pools glisten with first-grade snow-white salt ready for harvesting.
Among the many gourmet salts available at Spices Bazaar, Peruvian pink salt is one that chefs, in restaurants, have come to appreciate.
Pink Salt from Peru is one of the few natural salts that are rich in flavor and history.
The hot spring seeps into 4,200 terraced salt ponds in the Maras near Cusco, Peru. Harvested, processed, and mined by hand for more than 2,000 years, the lakes are now owned by more than 380 individual families who, after harvesting, load the salt onto the backs of the furrows for a long time in the city.
