Licorice and its history
For several millennia, licorice has been one of the most commonly used remedies. It was used as a lozenge for the neck and thus took its place on the shelves of pharmacies.
Licorice comes from the plant Glycyrrhiza Glabra. Today, it grows in North Africa, the Middle East and China.
The history of licorice dates back to 2300 BC. The emperor of China Shennong had written about licorice that it was a magical plant that rejuvenated the old men of the time.
Licorice root was among the many treasures found in the tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun from 1350 BC. Scholars do not yet know why.
However, we know that licorice was a common ingredient in many of the treatments in Ancient Greece.
Uses of licorice
Licorice root is used both as an aromatic agent and as a medication. Available in many forms such as teas, capsules, liquids and even topical gels.
Today, many people use licorice root to treat conditions such as heartburn, acid reflux, hot flashes, coughs and bacterial and viral infections.
In addition, licorice tea is said to soothe sore throats, while topical gels claim to treat skin conditions such as acne or eczema.
In addition, licorice is used to flavor certain foods and beverages.
Herbal compounds
While it contains hundreds of plant compounds, the main active ingredient in licorice root is glycyrrhizin.
Glycyrrhizin is responsible for the sweet taste of the root, as well as for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
However, glycyrrhizin is also associated with many of the side effects of licorice root.
As a result, some products use deglycerinated licorice (DGL), which had removed the glycyrrhizin.
