History:

Howard Hughes purchased a newly formed western airline, Airwest, in 1968. The deal was finished in 1970 and from that point forward the airline called itself Hughes Airwest. Under Hughes’ ownership the airline eliminated many local stops, expanding its services to longer flights, even into international routes. In 1979 Hughes Airwest experienced labor problems that drove the company into financial distress. Hughes sold it to the then newly formed Republic Airlines in 1980.
