Specially built for the Bering sea patrol, the northland is one of a long line of coast guard ships which have contributed to our knowledge of Arctic and Antarctic seas through their patrols and in exploration expeditions. The original painting was prepared by Ernest J Haas for a special US navy training film entitled "men, ships, and ice".
