A daughter, Maggie, is betrothed to the young French Paul Durand; the other, Hannah falls for Monge, although engaged to Archer farmhand. Monge fell out with Hannah and decides to go North. Durand, inexperienced, follows in hopes of getting rich to marry Maggie. The expedition is successful, but Durand dies and his friend take his body to the farm. But Maggie did not wait and married a newcomer. Meanwhile, Archer disappears before Monge wife Hannah has a baby. It's the return of Archer, after a few years, which will mark the contrast between the character of Monge, the trapper, and Hannah, the farmer's wife. She became the mistress of Archer trying to kill Monge during a hunting trip. The two lovers, terrified of being discovered, try to make the border with the child. In the storm, the girl falls ill. Monge party in pursuit, is informed by a well-equipped forest ranger that manages to bring their children, while the mother, exhausted, dies in the snow.
