Whether you are looking to complete a collection or just looking for good stories for children to read, the books of this set will not disappoint.
Grade: 3-6
Summary: The publishing company, The Bookhouse for Children, was the brainchild of author, and editor Olive Beaupre Miller. She created a collection of children's literature that delighted both children and their parents. Miller was constantly seeking appropriate children's literature to read to her daughter. She considered stories proper if they fit three criteria: They had to be well written, make a positive ethical statement, and be graded to fit the developmental age of the child. If she was unable to find a story or poem that met all three requirements, she wrote one herself.
This is a collection of stories that are of romance and heroic adventure, including stories from the great epics. From generation to generation these tales were told or sung by wandering bards in hall and castle until at last some poet wrote down the tale and gave it permanent form in the peculiar style and rhythm of his own country.
Here you will find the romantic tale of "Sir Beaumains, the Kitchen Knight," from the legends concerning King Arthur and his Round Table; or "The Homecoming of Olysseus" from the Greeks; and the"The Wanderings of Aeneas," from the Romans.
Some of the stories and poems in this volume include: ""Cuculain, the Irish Hound," from the Gaelic bards; "Frithjof, the Viking," from the NOrse saga; "The Song of Roland," from the great French epic; "The STory of Cid" from the Spanish; and more from Russia, India, Persia.
