Story Starters on the Vikings, a Creative Writing Program by Steve & Jean Henrich
Grade: 4-7
Summary: What a great way to fit writing into your history unit!
With countless idea lists for selecting the elements of characterization, plot, and setting that tie in with occupations, types of dress, and actual locales in Viking history, this book will help create interdisciplinary links between Language Arts and the study of the Norsemen.
Story Starters is divided into four main sections:
Introductory Section--explains the different elements in a story and a brief overview of the main parts of a story; how to start a story; a list of vocabulary words used like a thesaurus, list of "ways to say 'said'" which gives children an oportunity to create emotion and expression when developing dialogue.
Character Section--worksheets to help develop a character by answering a series of questions about your character's looks, clothing, appearance, lifestyle, traits, desires, and interests; followed by character recipe sheets for King, slave, freeman, earl, woman; plus character cards to supplement a character or recipe or use to begin story
Setting Section--similiar in style to character section
Plot Section-- parts of a plot; how to develop the plot; plot options to choose and develop; cliff hangers which give a student the first part of a story which can then be expanded with plot cards, setting cards, or character cards
The book also includes project ideas to expand your child's story and a story flow chart that gives students a clear sequence to follow in creating a complete short story as their culminating project. .
