What's on this DVD; USS
Constitution, Old Ironsides
This is a DVD collection of the US Navy film on Old Ironsides; USS Constitution. You might know that we collect old films and we finally have enough films on this magnificent ship to release this DVD. You really get the since of what we are as Americans through these old films. As a child, I remember building a model of the USS Constitution, and remembering the story of how her crews were amazed when the enemy's canon balls bounced off her hull. That, as you know, is how she got her nickname "Old Ironsides". Today, she is the oldest floating Navy ship in the world. The pride of her crew still comes out today!! "Old Ironsides"!!! In 1924, she was is such disrepair, the navy was going to scrape her and if it wasn't for a poem written by Oliver Wendell Holmes about "Old Ironsides", the ship may have been lost forever. We hope you'll enjoy these films, we certainly did. 1st Film; "Old Ironsides Heritage". This is a short story about the USS Constitution, Old Ironsides, and how she was saved from destruction because of age. Great footage of inside as well as outside of the ship. I think most have seen this film before. Great film. Runtime 6:24 Min's 2nd Film: "Trip to New York Harbor, 1927". This is a very rare footage of the USS Constitution being ferried by tugs to get to NY shipyard for repairs. This is truly an amazing film to see plus, folks everywhere came out to support the ship as she went into NY Harbor for repairs. We left the original soundtrack of people narrating plus, the bands playing with all of it's flaws. The Navy did not have the money to restore the ship, so the folks of the day came up with a phrase, "Penny to Save" as an idea to raise money for her repairs. 4 years latter, she came out better than new. Thank God that someone had the idea to film this event. What a treasure for us to see. Runtime 18:20 Min's 3rd Film; "The Battle of Tripoli Pirates". This a a USN film that explains why and how we fought not only the Barbary Pirates of Tripoli, but the French too. What was so amazing, just a few years earlier, the France helped us win the Revolutionary War against the British. Great stuff and also a very good piece of history. Runtime 18:55 Min's 4th Film; "The War of 1812". This is another Navy film on the War of 1812. The British were determined to regain control over the Colonies and thought they could easily win against the young United States. Our struggling nation was absolutely out classed in everyway, on land and on the sea. It is amazing how little things like our little Navy could change the tide of War. Another great film. Runtime 19:56 Min's 5th Film; "Other Tall ships". This is a collection of other Tall Ships. 1st, 1938 film "Home movie" on the SS Denmark setting sail, the ship got caught on the wrong side of the wind and needed a tugboat to set her into the wind. Amazing footage. 2nd film, A newsreel on the USS Denmark being transferred to the USCG for costal patrol. 3rd film, The "Denmark" is returned to Denmark after the war. 4th film, A newsreel showing Italian sailors learning to man a Sailing "Man-O-War ship. 5th film, A war newsreel showing the Red Cross packaging care boxes and loading them on a sailing ship for POWs. 6th Film, 1956--The Portuguese Frigate Man-O-War "D. Fernando IIe Gloria", was used as orphanage and a training ship for young men. Very Rare. 7th Film, Is the USCG cutter "USS Eagle" sailing ship training cadets for the Coast Guard. Great footage! Runtime 10:21 Min's 6th Film; "Seas of Liberty". One of the needs of our early nation and still today is the Freedom of the Seas. This is a Navy film story of the history of that need. Concentrates on the early days, as the story looks back. Runtime 7:46 Min's 7th Film; "Old Ironsides Newsreels". This to is a collection of short films on Old Ironsides. 1st, Navy men in 1904 are looking out to sea with old Ironsides in the background. Very RARE footage! 3rd, This is a navy clip about remaking a mast for the ship. Also very RARE.
