ROSENTHAL 1985 Christmas Plate

The Basilica of St. Ulrich and St. Afra

is the subject of the 1985 Rosenthal Christmas Plate, the 12th plate in the Rosenthal Classic Rose Christmas series which started in 1974 as a continuation of the Rosenthal Traditional Christmas series (1910-1974).  This 1985 plate features a view of the late-Gothic Basilica of St. Ulrich and St. Afra (the patron saints of Augsburg) which was built between 1476 and 1500.  The Renaissance tower and distinctive onion dome became a model for many later Bavarian churches.  The “Peace of Augsburg” was signed here, recognizing both Catholicism and Protestantism as valid denominations.  

Inscribed on the front WEIHNACHTEN (German for “Christmas Night”) 1985. Signed on the back:  WEIHNACHTSTELLER (Christmas plate), CLASSIC ROSE, ROSENTHAL GROUP GERMANY.  Artwork (Entwurf) by Helmut Drexler.  Unterglasur (Underglaze) / Handgemalt (Hand-painted). Pierced foot for hanging wire.  Diameter approximately 8.25 inches (21 cm).  original issue price in 1985 was $195.
