ABOUT THE AUTHOR: L. T. Meade was one of the most popular writers of the late 19th century. She wrote over 280 books including novels for children and adults as well as detective stories (capitalizing on the popularity of Sherlock Holmes at the time). She also wrote short stories for journals such as The Ladies Pictorial and served as the editor of the first 6 volumes of Atalanta. A Sweet Girl Graduate was the first full-length book featuring women students and describing their life in higher education. Meade had written in Atalanta that college life was healthy and intellectually stimulating and provided the late Victorian era girl with rich opportunities they should take advantage of and be proud of.
Her books were so popular that many of the plot turns and characters first written about by Meade in her "school" series have become stereotypes of the genre. Although they may seem dated because of that to the modern reader, one should remember that before Meade, readers were not familiar with the incidents and situations portrayed in what would become an important part of the growing "girl culture" movement. Meade was active in women's issues from the beginning and kept her own name after marrying in 1879 at the age of 34. Her thirty books dealing with higher education for women is credited with laying the foundation for uprooting male educational traditions that ultimately resulted in the 20th century establishment of women's colleges at Oxford, Cambridge, and elsewhere.
Cornell University, in Ithaca, NY, has the largest collection of Meade's works.
