Although clearly lying very much on the fringes of the gangster genre, this is an interesting development of the semi-documentary thrillers of the forties and seems even more relevant now more than ever!

Richard Widmark's public health service doctor, despite obstruction from the police, pushes forward a manhunt to find a three-man gang, including Jack Palance and Zero Mostel, who have murdered an illegal Armenian immigrant with bubonic plague. The race to stop the disease from spreading takes place in the traditional gangster-film territory of the waterfront, and scenes such as the initial murder of the plague-carrier and the final chase and gunfight in and out of a dock warehouse might have come from a much 'purer' crime film.
