James Franco is Oscar Diggs, a smalltime sideshow magician and con-artist who is whisked away in his hot air balloon to the vibrant Land of Oz. He thinks he's hit the jackpot with an easily influenced population. He leads them to believe, through trickery, that he is the great wizard that everyone has been waiting for.

But three witches (Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams) are unconvinced and he's quite taken with Theodora (Kunis), but a misunderstanding leads her down an unexpected path. Reluctantly drawn into epic problems facing Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it's too late.
