Hairspray 2 Disc Shake & Shimmy Edition

This version of Hairspray had a lot to live up to because the original 80s movie by John Waters was really something. I think this version based upon the musical captures the spirit of the original. That’s seen in the opening song Good Morning Baltimore that features rats, a flasher and a drunk. That’s what the movie is about. It’s a satire of 1950s/60s which is held up as the heyday of Baby Boomer white America. Hairspray reminds the viewer that this golden era had racism and segregation as the main characters attempt to integrate a teen dance TV show. The songs are good. Nikki Blonsky as the spunky main character is great with her attitude and dance moves. So are the other stars like John Travolta as her mom and Christopher Walken as her dad.
