This pastel has an interesting story. It seems in 1938, artist Alva Elizabeth Goldsworthy and her compatriots embarked on some sort of endeavor which turned out favorably. Mrs Goldsworthy created this pastel piece to commemorate the outcome for all involved, by humorously comparing it to a naval vessel with themselves as the crew.
What this endeavor or event was...is unknown.
Alva Elizabeth Goldsworthy (1850-1941)
When Alva Goldworthy's parents moved to Oakland, Caliornia, it changed her life forever. She was accepted and enrolled at the prestigious University of California (Berkeley) where her art talents flourished. Though not hugely prolific the pieces she did create were always of a high caliber, whether landscapes, seascapes, portraits or still life works.
