The Artist:
William Buffett was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1935, and moved to Los Angeles at the age of five. The residential cityscapes of Southern California, particularly along the shore of the Pacific, have been and are still the primary subject matter of his art. Buffett first heard New Orleans jazz while in his adolescence, and picturesque horn, banjo and rhythm players became another lasting subject of his work.
Buffett graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Southern California, and soon discovered that he was temperamentally unfit for commercial art and practiced portraiture instead. To supplement his schooling, he decided to look at the art collections in the museums of the United States. In order to do it economically, Buffett converted a used delivery van into a motor home, and set out to see as many museums as he could.
Buffett relocated to one of the stop-off points of his trip, New Orleans, as the music was there and portraiture was more sought after in the South. At an outdoor exhibit where he was showing examples of his portraits, he met a couple from Jackson, Mississippi who wanted a portrait but had to get back home. They offered to take him with them and were sure he would find more work when he arrived. Buffett went, and there was such a market that he decided to make regular visits there. He also found himself living, at various times, in St. Louis, New York City, Baton Rouge, Zurich, New Orleans again, and then Santa Barbara, where he married. Once in Santa Barbara, Buffett began producing limited edition serigraphs.
In 1985, after having moved to Nashville, his work was published in poster form, and his work became widely recognized. He has been a major force in the poster market ever since, an artist whose popularity and influence are unmatched by most.
