The Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, in 1967, sponsored its second convocation based on the encyclical, Pacem in Terris, of Pope John XXIII. Emphasizing in particular the threats to peaceful coexistence that have persisted in the world despite the Pope's clear appeal to men of all nations to ponder the sources of international tension, the convocation was attended by more than 300 diplomats, scholars, theologians, journalists, and businessmen, including Pope Paul VI, Abdui Rahman Pazhwak, Princess Souvanna Phouma, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thich Nhat Hanb, Jose Figueres, lame; A. Pike, Martin Niemoiler, John Kenneth Galbraith, and I. William Fuibright- in short, a uniquely qualified cross-section of world leaders. The conferees explored the problem of intervention as exemplified by Vietnam, the ramifications of inter-dependence, the place of international law in world affairs, and the spiritual and scientific aspects of a world that must look beyond coexistence to eventual true peace. This book is a record of that convocation, organized and edited for thoughtful reading and study.
