During the Eocene epoch tiny four toed horses and rhinos roamed the plains of central Oregon. They grazed beside stands of ancient Redwood and Pine trees. In the nearby low-lying swamps alligators cruised around Bald Cypress trees. This was approximately 50 million years ago. During that very dramatic Geological period, nearby volcanoes erupted and some of the wood from those trees was permanently preserved as petrified wood. The preserving mineral was quartz one of nature's more durable gemstones.
The pre-mineralized wood from Hampton Butte, Deschutes County, Central Oregon, USA is composed of agate and jasper as well as preserved cell structure. Colors include Carnelian reds, forest greens, dark mustard, sandstone, and browns. Many specimens are perfect casts with no broken surfaces. The presence of decayed cell structure and beetle larvae borings suggests that these are molded from dead wood. The shape of the specimens and the material they are made of is quite a contrast. It's in the shape of something that should be very soft, light, and rough, but it is hard, heavy, naturally smooth and polished.
This piece would look great in your cabinet or on your desk.
