COVER: And trhe Children Shall Lead Them. Young Americans return to God.
Cover: Illustration by Kinuko Y Craft.
FOR YOUNG MOVERS, THE NEW DIRECTION IS BACK TO THE PEWS
Having transformed American society as they marched toward middle age, the nation's 75 million baby boomers are leading a return to organized religion. Much of the revival is fueled by the boomers' experiencing parenthood: they want a place for their children to acquire solid values. Others seek to reas-sess--and make sense of--their own lives. Whatever the inspiration, they're picking among congregations as if they were restaurants. Accordingly, the clergy are tailoring their services to meet the under-45 crowd's tastes. And what the boomers seem to like best are mall-like megachurches offering exercise equipment, sports teams and, above all, a wide range of self-help groups. To keepers of the faith, the trend is both troubling and hopeful. Society: Page 50.
FIRST STEPS TOWARD PEACE:
Saddam Hussein's decision to free his remaining hostages launched the gulf crisis into a new phase. It underlined the case for giving sanctions more time, yet made it easier for George Bush to order a military strike without fear of harming Saddam's "human shields." A NEWSWEEK Poll finds broad support for negotiations--but also willingness to fight if diplomacy fails. National Report: Page 20.
SINATRA'S STILL SWINGIN' AT 75:
Start spreadin' the news: Ole Blue Eyes is in for a very very good year--his 75th. His fellow singers awarded him an ELLA Lifetime Achievement Award last week in Los Angeles, he'll be the star of a two-hour CBS special on Dec. 16, two new sets of his top recordings are out and he plans concerts worldwide throughout 1991. The Arts: Page 66.
