Measures 5-11/16" X 7-29/32", 282+ pp, written by Francine Lewis, two-tone illustrations by Nina Dorothy Albright, glossy hardcover published by Whitman Publishing Co. (WI), Whitman catalog #2364:49.

This is very likely the original printing of this Whitman title, as the catalog number on the spine reads "2364:49," a continuation of the "2300" series which began publication in 1938 (later editions of this title would feature a "1500" catalog number).  In addition, the board-stock used on the covers is heavier than the covers issued shortly thereafter on the "1500" series, and the spine is sewed securely into the spine (rather than just glued).  Finally, all the listings at the back of the book are for 1954 (or previous) titles -- including titles for which Whitman would never publish a glossy American edition ( ROY ROGERS AND THE GOPHER CREEK GUNMAN; GENE AUTRY AND THE THEIF RIVER OUTLAWS; and RED RYDER AND THE RIDDLE OF ROARING RANGE), and the inclusion of WALT DISNEY'S PETER PAN, which received a very limited publication.  This edition of POLLY FRENCH OF WHITFORD HIGH is, thus, a collectors item for Whitman fans, of the transition from the dust-jacketed Whitman teen books of the late 1930s through very early 1950s, and the glossy Whitman series with which most baby boomers were familiar in the 1950s.
