The Broadleaf Batavian endive is a leafy plant similar to lettuce with green leaves turning to white in the heart of the plant. The Broadleaf Batavian leaves are tightly packed on a 12-16" wide head that can grow up to 9" tall. The delicious leaves are broad and slightly curly.

85 days. Escarole type. Broad, slightly twisted outer leaves form around 12 to 16 inch, tight-packed heads. Very deep heart is well blanched, creamy-white, and buttery.

  Like other lettuces, Endive lettuce is a cool weather crop. But, Endive holds up better in hot weather than most other lettuces. Time your spring crop to mature prior to the onset of hot and humid weather. We recommend an indoor start in the spring for an early crop for your salad bowl.

We are a small family run seed processor that has a long tradition of farming for many generations. I fondly remember my Grandfather telling stories about his Grandfather tilling the earth and the events that impacted his success. The stories bring to life the courage and creativity required to survive capricious weather and market prices. Our history makes it clear that the rewards of farming, including the birthing of the calves, the bounty of a good harvest, and the family's feeling of being rooted in the soil. I still remember with pride, getting to sit on my Grandfathers lap while driving the tractor for the first time during corn harvest.
 
In addition to commercial crops, most family farms also have large gardens to grow much of the food consumed on a farm. Growing your own vegetables, flowers, spices and herbs, canning and freezing were a normal part of life on the farm. We always saved seed from each plant for starting the cycle for the next year.
