METHODS & MATERIALS: ART BY CENSUS--SHOULD PEOPLE GET EXACTLY WHAT THEY ASK FOR? by Carmi Weingrod. Artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid conducted research to determine what kind of artwork Americans like and dislike. Their project provides an insightful look at how we feel about art.

NOYES CAPEHART LONG: ART EMERGING FROM REAL EXPERIENCES. by M Stephen Doherty. "My art is about my life," says Long, whose retrospective exhibition "Noyes Capehart Long: From the Private Diaries" is now circulating through his home state of North Carolina.

THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: DELIGHTING IN DETAILS by Sally Jorgensen. To me, a painting has to pass the test of accuracy and credibility. But verisimilitude alone will not suffice. Content, composition, and color all have to work together.

ESSENTIALS OF PAINTING PASTEL LANDSCAPES by David Dale. After preparing my supports, I work spontaneously and quickly, trying to depict the spirit of the Indiana landscape in pastel. I think in terms of form, then subject, "attacking" my painting surface in a race with the sun.

RECORDING THE SEA AND SURF by Deborah Chapin. The ocean's constant movement creates many difficulties for an artist trying to record its power and beauty. By concentrating on a few key elements, however, it's possible to paint a successful plein air seascape.

PAINTING FOR PRESERVATION by Ruthe Thompson. In painting his lush, detailed landscapes of the Sierra Nevada, California artist Doug Fairchild hopes to help prevent the destruction of our wilderness's natural beauty.
