This original play production starred Edwin Stevens as the Devil, with Marguerite Snow, Marion Lorne, Paul McAllister, Dorothy Dorr, and Frank Monroe. The Hartford premiere was a great success, and the play launched a Broadway premiere also in 1908, starring George Arliss, who later played the same role in three different film versions, the second debuted co-star Fredric March. Many of Molnar's plays were adapted to film, the two most famous being THE DEVIL, and LILIOM--the film version directed by Fritz Lang starring Charles Boyer, and was later adapted to the Rogers and Hammerstein musical CAROUSEL. Well-preserved.
